I noticed it yesterday. I have client websites, and vertical sites across a handful of major hosts and strange things started happening yesterday afternoon. Log-ins to Content Management System (CMS) sites were being redirected and disabled. A quick check and the clues all point to a distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) on 1and1. To avoid further exploits they locked everyone out of their site. Thanks!
Today the carnage spread. Blue Host sites went down around noon eastern time followed quickly by HostGator. Support has been inundated with questions, and it seems like a lot of system administrators are going to have a not-so-fun New Year’s Eve.
Is it the start of something bigger? No, I don’t think so. This happened like a cascade about six months ago and resolved itself pretty quickly but New Year’s eve has held a special place in our hearts ever since Y2K.
My advice, turn off the devices and enjoy the ball drop with friends and family in an old-school kind of way, sans technology.
Happy New Year!
